Percussionist Gijs Anders van Straalen presents an innovative new percussion book, Concept for the New Percussionist, 4/4 & 12/8. For the last twenty years, he's been recording percussion practice routines for himself and his students, because it was often difficult and even impossible to find specific information. The result is an innovative method that tackles topics such as rhythmic structures, techniques, independence and timing. The book isn't just for percussionists; drummers can learn a lot from this method too.

Concept for the New Percussionist 4/4 & 12/8 is geared specifically toward advanced and professional players who have a background in more traditional genres such as Latin, Brazilian or West African music, and who want to translate their ideas, grooves and sounds to jazz, improv, pop and other genres. The system is comprised of both simple and advanced rhythmic structures, music styles and techniques in the time signatures 4/4 and 12/8.

Room for your own interpretation

The book leaves plenty of room for the musician to interpret it to fit their own ideas. It gives the student the freedom to put the study materials together in their own way and to interpret it differently for any given instrument. As you can imagine, that makes it the book that keeps on giving, as there's always something new to glean from it. Gijs gives tips and advice on a wide range of percussion instruments, including hand drums, cajon, udu, pandeiro and many more.

Musician and photographer Rory Ronde has provided a wide range of instrument photographs for the book.

About the author

Gijs Anders van Straalen is a Dutch percussionist known predominantly for his work with Dutch artists such as Wouter Hamel, Janne Schra, Blistered, Giovanca and many other national and internation artists, both live and in the studio. He was one of the original percussionists in the Dutch version of Disney's Lion King musical. Gijs has endorsements with Pearl Percussion, Paiste Cymbals, Q Percussion sticks, Hardcase cases and pete Engelhart Metal Percussion.
